WooCommerce, Magento and BigCommerce: finding e-commerce clients beyond Shopify

If you build online stores, Shopify is the obvious place to look for clients. But a lot of stores run on other platforms, and those owners often have a harder time finding someone who knows their setup. That's an opening for you.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a shop, and it's the second most common store platform in our data, with 362 stores. Because it sits on top of WordPress, a WooCommerce store inherits all of WordPress's habits: plugins, themes and updates that need looking after.

That makes these stores good candidates for:

  • Speed work. 71% took more than 3 seconds to respond when we checked. Product pages with lots of plugins are often the slowest.
  • Care plans. A store can't afford to break after an update. Owners understand why someone should be testing updates for them.
  • Checkout improvements. Fewer fields, clearer shipping costs, better mobile layouts.

Magento and Adobe Commerce

Magento stores, 38 in our database, tend to be larger businesses with bigger catalogues. Magento is powerful and complex, which means owners usually need specialist developers, and those developers are hard to find.

If you know Magento, these are high-value leads. Common needs include version upgrades, performance work and, for some smaller stores, a move to a simpler platform. Magento 1 reached its end of life in 2020, so any store still running on it is overdue for a serious conversation.

BigCommerce

BigCommerce is a hosted platform like Shopify, with 24 stores in our data. The pitch is similar to Shopify: conversion, speed and design, rather than keeping the lights on.

OpenCart and PrestaShop

These are open-source platforms with smaller numbers in our database. Owners are often running older versions and may struggle to find support. If you have experience with either, a short message offering help with upgrades or a migration can go a long way.
