Wix sites that have outgrown their builder

Lots of businesses start on Wix and never look back, until the site starts holding them back. Here's how to find those businesses and what to say to them.

Wix sites that have outgrown their builder

Wix is often the first website a business ever has. The owner picked a template one weekend, filled in the text and got on with running the business. Years later, the site still works, but it no longer matches the business it represents. Those owners are some of the most receptive people you can contact, because they already suspect their site could be better.

The clearest sign: nobody has touched it in years

Wix sites in our database stand out for one thing. 29% of them show a footer copyright year that's at least two years old. At the time of writing, that's a higher share than on any other major platform we track. That usually means the site was built once and left alone, which is exactly the kind of owner who needs help but hasn't gone looking for it. Our Wix website statistics page has the full numbers.

Redesign on Wix, or move?

This is the first question a Wix owner will ask, so have an answer ready.

  • Staying on Wix is cheaper and faster. If the business is small and the owner wants to keep editing the site themselves, a fresh design on Wix may be the right call.
  • Moving to another platform makes sense when the business needs things Wix makes hard, like a complex store, multiple languages or a lot of custom content. Wix doesn't let you export a site to another platform, so moving means rebuilding the pages. Be upfront about that.

Offer both options and let them choose. It shows you're thinking about their business rather than your favourite tool.

What to point out

  • The old footer year. Easy to check and hard to argue with.
  • Speed. Wix sites can be heavy, and 70% of the ones we checked took more than 3 seconds to respond.
  • Generic templates. Many Wix sites still look like the template they started from. A short note about how their site could stand out from competitors in their area can work well.

Who to start with

Filter by niche. Local service businesses like salons, cafés, trades and clinics are common on Wix, and they rely on their website for bookings and calls. Pick the niche you know, sort by opportunity score and start at the top.
