Which website platforms do businesses actually use?

Every agency has a favourite platform and an opinion about all the others. We'd rather look at the numbers. This post shows what the websites in the Dozif database are built with, and it updates on its own: every figure below is pulled live from the database each hour.

A quick note on the data

Dozif's database isn't a census of the whole web. It's the business websites we've collected and checked, currently 17,490 of them. Some platforms are easier for us to find than others, so treat the totals as a picture of our database rather than market share. The percentages within each platform are more telling than the totals.

Website builders

Builders are where most small businesses start: no code, a monthly fee and a template.

At the time of writing, a few things stand out. Wix has the highest share of sites with an outdated footer year among the big builders, which matches what you'd expect from a tool many owners set up once and forget. Webflow has the most sites in our data, partly because many are still on their free webflow.io address.

WordPress dwarfs everything else here, as it does on the wider web. The heavier systems like Drupal, TYPO3 and AEM are much rarer, but they belong to larger organisations with bigger budgets.

Shopify and WooCommerce dominate the stores we've found. Magento and BigCommerce are smaller but tend to belong to more established shops.

Elementor is the most common page builder by a wide margin. At the time of writing, WPBakery sites, often older ones, show one of the highest shares of outdated footers.

What this means if you're looking for clients

  • Pick a platform with enough sites to work with. A few hundred well-chosen leads on a platform you know beats thousands on one you don't.
  • Look at the outdated and score columns, not just the totals. A smaller platform with lots of neglected sites can be a better hunting ground than a big one.
  • Check contact rates. Platforms where fewer businesses publish an email will need a different approach, like contact forms or a phone call.
